April 23 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Call to Action:
Please sign the Marine Resources Council Petition (click here) and join us at the Indian River County Board of County Commissioners meeting Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 9am.
CWC asks its Partners, and members of the general public to attend this important meeting of the Indian River County Board of County Commissioners to stop the John’s Island Water Management (JIWM) Effluent Pipeline
JIWM proposes to bore a tunnel under the Indian River Lagoon. A pipeline will be installed in this tunnel to carry nutrient-rich wastewater byproduct, used as irrigation water for John’s Island.
County-supplied Reuse Water used for irrigation has about 20 times the concentration of Total Nitrogen as that of the Lagoon itself, and is a significant source of Lagoon nutrient pollution. City of Vero Beach Reuse Water that supplies JIWM has about 50 times the concentration.
Construction risks, operational risks, systematic broadcast of nutrients, and the availability of lower-risk alternatives have not been sufficiently developed and need adequate consideration prior to any decision.
