The organizers have planned a full agenda including a presentation by featured speaker, Dr. Duane DeFreese, Executive Director of the Indian River Lagoon Council/Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program (IRL/NEP).

Dr. DeFreese is a leading scientific expert on impacts to the Indian River Lagoon.  He was instrumental in helping to secure National Estuary Program designation for the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) in 1990.

In September 2015, he was named Executive Director of the cooperative organization that would be awarded official designation as Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program (One Lagoon).

In this role, Duane works with federal, state and local government agencies, scientific research organizations, academic institutions, elected officials, industry, non-profits like CWC, and the general public. The goal of the IRL/NEP is to develop and implement a science-based restoration strategy for one of the nation’s most threatened estuarine ecosystems.

Community plays a leading role in Dr. DeFreese’s
One Lagoon vision

Consistent with the IRL/NEP “One Lagoon” strategy, Dr. DeFreese believes a communications “gap” exists between Science, the Public and Government, but it can be filled by organizations like the CWC.  It’s is also a great opportunity for regular citizens to band together, to re-engage with their elected government, and effect change for the better.

The presentation will be followed by Q&A, and a short presentation by CWC on the progress we’ve made on the several specific initiatives we are pursuing, including proposed Biosolids legislation, our Septic-to-Sewer initiative, water craft no-discharge enforcement, and proposed tertiary treatment of re-use irrigation water.

We will also provide an update on the use of Glyphosate (Roundup® Monsanto Technology, LLC).

The last Public Meeting was “standing room only.” CWC wishes to thank Community Church for their generosity providing their larger, and well-equipped facility.

Please mark your calendars and plan to join us!
